Trustees announce the closure of The Greig Hall

Trustees of The Greig, the community and leisure facilities in Alcester have announced that The Greig Hall will be closing at the end of September.

The decision follows years of difficulties at the centre and delays in securing planning permission and the necessary approvals for the Trust's proposals to create new facilities.

The decision to close The Greig Hall will ensure that The Greig Lifestyles building - which includes a successful gym, dance studio and multi-purpose rooms - can remain open.

In addition to the closure of the hall, the Trust is cutting back on its staff and implementing further cost-cutting measures.

Ross Greig, chair of the Board of Trustees and Great-Grandson of David Greig, who founded the Hall, said:

"This decision has been a very difficult one for the Trust to make and it has not been taken lightly, but we have no viable alternative. People need to understand that we have to run The Greig as a business and simply cannot go on operating a facility that drains our limited reserves. It is plain to see that The Greig Hall needs major repairs and improvements and as each year passes, it gets used less and less frequently."

"As Trustees and Company Directors, we have had to weigh up the various options available, and we remain convinced that our proposals to create new facilities are the only way forward."

He added:

"The vast majority of our users have given us resounding backing to the proposals and whilst I appreciate, as well as anybody, that there is a great deal of affection and sentimentality for The Greig Hall, we have to move with the times."

"It's very disappointing that we are in this position as we had hoped to keep The Greig Hall open whilst the new facilities were being built, but the delays we are experiencing mean that this is now impossible. These proposals are our last opportunity to secure the long-term future of The Greig, ensuring that it can be enjoyed by future generations."

The plans to create new facilities in the extended Lifestyles building would ensure that all of the activities that currently take place in The Greig Hall could be accommodated in the new centre.

The proposals are currently with Stratford-on-Avon District Council and are likely to be determined in the coming weeks.

User Groups have been informed of the decision to close the Hall, and every effort will be made to accommodate the groups in the existing Lifestyles building. If the new facilities are built, we will welcome them all back plus new groups and users. Please visit our development web site www.thenewgreig.com
